The Moon Was Yellow / They Came to Cordura / All My Tomorrows / French Foreign Legion

Top Choices (mono)

•1982 Japan The Hit Maker LP

•1989 Japan All the Way: The Hit Collection CD

Top stereo choice:

•1998 UK Sinatra Sings of Love and Things CD

Subpar:

•Original stereo Sinatra Sings...of Love and Things LP (at least the N2 pressing, as sampled)

•1980 SN-series Sinatra Sings...of Love and Things LP - tape dropouts audible

Avoid:

Sinatra 80th and Complete Capitol Singles Collection CDs - two very different, yet equally dreadful, stereo remixes

A Paris EP, plus all mono LP releases EXCEPT The Hit Maker - reverb-added “wet” tapes used

NOTES

•As we’ve seen with some previous selections (Monique, Mr. Success), most mono releases do not use the original, dry “single” mix, but used tweaked tapes with added reverb and compression.

•Oddly, the 1980 ...of Love and Things LP has several tape dropouts on this track, while the 1983 and 1984 LPs do not.

All other mono versions use reverb-added tapes.
How does that degrade the sound? Here is a clip that runs in this order:
1.) Original D1 mono Sinatra Sings...of Love and Things LP (“wet” tapes);
2.) Japanese The Hit Maker LP (correct “dry” original “single mix” tapes); 3.) The D1 LP again; and 4.) The Hit Maker LP againhttps://app.box.com/s/7obqfp2f676f4gbcgmo200lxgeuzqounshapeimage_8_link_0

Subpar:

•Mono releases (listed in RED at left) that use the original, soupy mono singles mix.

Avoid:

At the Movies and (even moreso)  Complete Capitol Singles Collection CDs - unappealing stereo remix

NOTES

•There is an audible tape splice at 0:17 on all releases.

•Perhaps surprisingly, and in contrast to other songs from the ...Of Love and Things compilation, the mono LP mix is less wet (has less reverb) than the original mono 45 “singles mix.”  Mono Mix #2 (the LP mix) is superior.

•Neither mono mix has had a digital release

•This song could benefit from a tastefully-executed stereo remix; too much reverb on most releases.

Top Choice (mono):

•1984 Dutch DMM Sinatra Sings...of Love and Things LP

(but see NOTES at far right)

Top stereo choice:

•1989 UK Screen Sinatra CD

(but see NOTES at far right)

There are many mediocre, overly-reverberant releases.  Even the top choices are not especially impressive, and have too much reverb added.

Subpar:

Screen Sinatra LP - fold-down to mono from stereo version, causing some odd balance issues.  (Too bad, as this release is excellent tonally.)

The Works stereo LP - Slightly dull tone

•The CDs marked *** at left - Noise reduction added to 1988 digital version.

Avoid:

The Sinatra Touch mono LP - Defective, with dramatic drop in volume midway through song

My Funny Valentine, The Movie Years - heavily compressed, dark mono tone.

•Original, SN-series and 1984 UK All the Way stereo LPs: Dark, Dull tone.

•Mono All the Way LPs - sourced from wrong tapes

NOTES

•In my opinion, the mono mix is superior to the wide-separation-style stereo mix, but the two “unfutzed” mono mix releases are middlingly mastered, and the LP releases use processed tapes or are fold-downs.

•For mono: only the 45 and EP are sourced from the correct, unprocessed tapes.

•The original stereo mix on this song, unlike many of the stereo mixes on the ALL THE WAY album, is quite dry.

•As with other ALL THE WAY tracks, the stereo mix appears to have been mixed (accidentally?) with strings on the right.  Only the 1984 UK LP (intentionally?) has the strings on the left, where they belong.

•All USA CDs are derived from the 1988 remixed CD.  Some are untampered copies; 1996 CDs, mastered by Bob Norberg, add noise reduction; 2004 CD re-uses Norberg’s version;  2002 adds slight compression to the 1988 file.

•All UK CDs use the original stereo release.

•The 1988 stereo remix is good overall, but the instrumental intro suffers compared to the better original-mix masterings.  Comparison audio available here.  (First clip = original mix; Second clip = 1988 remix)

Song #3:

All My Tomorrows

Top Choice (stereo):

Very close runner-up (also stereo):

•1989 UK Screen Sinatra CD (and its re-use in the 1989 UK Great Films & Shows CD set)

The “mono” Screen Sinatra LP, a very pleasant sounding release,  does not use the mono mix, but a fold-down to mono of the original stereo mix, which leads to some instrumental imbalances in the second half of the song.

Above: 1973 R1 The Works LP

Subpar:

•Mono releases - midrange-y tone (some worse than others; some are also considerably compressed, and belong in the “avoid” category)

Complete Capitol Singles - Overly processed

Avoid:

20 Classic Tracks LP - Runs too fast and has thin tone

NOTES

•Around the 0:44 mark, a loud “Clank” sound is audible, probably the sound of somebody bumping a mic stand.  It is edited out of stereo mixes #1, 2, and 3, but audible on all others.

•The vocal on “hep 2, 3, 4” at the end of the recording is strangely faded down on both the 1988 and 1990 mixes.

•As with other ALL THE WAY tracks, some stereo mixes (in ORANGE at left) oddly (accidentally, the first time?) have strings on the right.  Others (in BLUE at left) have the strings on the left, where they belong.
