I Love Paris

(Duet with Maurice Chevalier)

Top Choice:

•1984 UK Can-Can stereo LP

Close Second:

•1997 Australia Can-Can CD within 3-CD set

(No version is flawless.  See notes at right.)

NOTES

•This is one of the least-anthologized tracks in the Sinatra/Capitol catalog.

•Recorded at 20th Century-Fox, assumedly to multi-track 35mm mag film for 70mm 6-track Todd-AO theatrical release, but not included in the film itself.

•Each available option is problematic in one way or other.

Mix/edit variants:

Original 2:20 mono mix:  Dull, with the orchestra buried.  Reverb on vocals.  Fold down?

Original 2:20 stereo mix: Moderate-to-heavy reverb on vocals, both singers positioned just right of center. Vocal tone a little hollow.

2002 3:38 stereo remix: Dry, centered vocals, with heavy distortion in spots; Full-length take, but with some of the corrective edits from the 2:20 edit not included, resulting in an arguably meandering, sloppier performance.  Best orchestral sound, by far.

Arranger/Conductor: Nelson Riddle

Original Release: Can-Can soundtrack LP, mono and stereo, March 28, 1960

Original CD Release: Can-Can, 1989

Two edits of this recording:   The IN HOLLYWOOD release of 2002 includes a much longer edit, 1:19 longer than the standard Capitol release.  As you can see below, much, but not all, of the material in the Capitol release comes from he same takes as the longer IN HOLLYWOOD edit on Reprise, but not all of it.  Roughly 25 seconds of the shorter Capitol release are sourced from takes not found in the longer Reprise release.  Here’s a rundown:
