Arranger/Conductor: Nelson Riddle

Original Release: Australian & Italian The Rarities - Volume One LP, 1981

Original LP Release: Australian & Italian The Rarities - Volume One, 1981

Original CD Release: The Complete Capitol Singles Collection, 1996

Releases sampled for this comparison:

•1981 Australian The Rarities - Volume One LP

•1996 Complete Capitol Singles CD

Recommended top choice:

The Rarities - Volume One (See notes at far right)

Avoid:

Complete Capitol Singles - Norberged (See notes at right)

NOTES

•Frankly, the Norberg is probably more pleasing in terms of tone quality “off the shelf,” but the Rarities LP is pure mono hi-fi, and can be “seasoned to taste” via EQ, as it’s a pretty clean mastering, despite the slightly strident, bass-shy tone.

Trivial comment:

The LP is a little less “trimmed up” than the CD, so there’s about a second or so of extra “stuff” before the music actually starts, including a definite intake of breath by Mr. Sinatra that is missing from the CD.  (We came upon a similar situation with the MFSL track “My Funny Valentine” from Songs for Young Lovers.)
